Today was awesome, and I am pretty excited about what will come next!
My first assignment was to research how all of Facebook's advertisements work. I will need this knowledge to make my own ad.
In short, there are two main types of ads. The first is the obnoxious spam ads that show up on the side of the news feed. The second type of ad is a promoted post. These are a lot less odious because they are more like what people usually see- often they contain offers, rather than a request to like a page or go buy something like the sideline ads.
My second task was self-assigned. I decided that if I was to make an effective ad, I needed to know what other chocolate companies are doing with their facebook pages. I compiled a spreadsheet from the data I gathered, and made a rating on how well a company was doing by adding the number of people talking about the page to the highest number of likes on a post that I was able to find in a cursory glance. I then divided this number by the number of people who had liked the page. This gave me a number that I was able to use to easily see how well a company was using its page.
These are the numbers:
higher is better
Lindt Chocolate: 0.6
Hershey's: 0.4
Dove Chocolate: 3.1
Nestle Chocolate: 0.5
Cadbury Chocolate: 1.2
See's Candies: 0.8
Guittard Chocolate Company: 3.3
RMCF: 3.2
Purdy's Chocolatier: 2.6
Godiva Chcocolatier: 2.5
My third job was to research the pages for the franchises that are owned by RMCF. I needed to see which stores were doing the best advertisements to bring in customers. The stores whose managers did facebook posts did so many that I was really unable to see the effect that different types of ads had. Pretty much, if there was a discount, sales went up. This means that the variables are all in the target audience, which segways nicely into my next project of the day which I have not yet finished:
I used the data that I had gathered to see which age groups and sexes were the best targets for ads.
I will expound on this later.
